This has to be the most iconic image of Bhutan, one which stirred my fascination for Bhutan many years before. Now six years later, I am trekking my way up the mountain to experience Tiger Nest Monastery for myself. Perched on a hillside, this monastery stands over 2000m above sea level and it is said that Guru Rinpoche came here in the form of a tigeress (hence the name). From base camp it’s a two hour hike stopping in a teahouse as you catch your first glimpse of this beautiful feat of architecture.
It is magnificent and I can’t believe I am actually here. They say that every Bhutanese strives to visit Tiger Nest at least once in their lifetime and although I am not from Bhutan, I have fulfilled my lifetime wish.
